PURSUIT: A Novel – 33: Daytona

Daytona Beach – Sunday, March 19, 1989
Have car will travel. Destination—Daytona Beach. Bobby’s metallic blue SS Camaro with wide white racing strips cruised down A1A Oceanshore Boulevard with less than an hour remaining in the all day, all night ride from Kansas. The sports car was packed for the 24-hour ride with Jessie driving, Bobby snoring, and Tommy’s head asleep on Kendra’s chest.
Jessie’s face glowed with a tint of orange when the sun crested the horizon as she glanced across the surf hitting the beach. She punched the radio button with a shout, “Let’s paaarrrrty!” Madonna’s voice cut over the airways, singing—
Don’t go for second best baby, put your love to the test . . .
They approached the “strip” as it was known by any of the 200,000 high school and college students that invaded Daytona Beach for the 1989 MTV Spring Break party. The aftermath of its latest all-night party was littered across the sidewalk and street. Donny’s car, a white with black hood, ‘69 Boss 302 Mustang hugged close behind and in front, the RV rolled to a stop as the caravan added to the rear of a two-mile traffic jam. Kendra begged her mom to let her and Irene ride with the boys. After talking with Ken, she agreed and admonished them that the two cars were to stay safely close behind.
“This is as close as we’re going to get?” Jessie exclaimed as Bobbie shook the sleep from his eyes.
“Opening day for the MTV bands. Whadya expect?” Bobby said.
The radio cut in—
So if you want it right now, make him show you how . . .
“Well, if we’re going to have to just sit here . . . ” Jessie leaned over the stick shift and stuck the point of her tongue in Bobbie’s ear. His eyes popped. He felt more awake now with the jolt of her stimulation.
