Eternal life is a gift from God

God is not saying that your good works will
build you passage that earns you a place in heaven; for it is through
faith that you are saved, not works; no one, not one man, may take credit for
the eternal life freely given by His grace.
God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a
gift from God. Salvation is not a reward
for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so
that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.31
Your salvation is from the grace of God the Father,
who gives it freely to all who believe in Jesus the Christ, His only begotten
Son, who gave His life on the cross as the sacrifice for all your sins, was
resurrected to life by God on the third day, spent forty days with His
disciples, and then ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of His Father—Our Father and
Creator.32 God is making the point that you have the choice of
living a fruitful life here on earth, walking on stairs you build with Him,
those of good works, such that you are blessed with the fruit of heaven: love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and
self-control.33
